Monarch Butterflies Overwintering in Pacific Grove
Pacific Grove, CA: Monarch Butterflies overwintering at the Monarch Grove Sanctuary. A new generation of butterflies returns yearly to several locations in the San Francisco Bay Area to wait out the winter months when temperatures are low and food sources are scarce. They gather together to conserve heat when it is cold. During warmer days, they will look for food sources such as nectar and return to these clusters at night. The butterflies are usually here from October to February.
While I was there, the temperature was in the mid-50’s and most of the thousands of Monarch Butterflies were gathered in clusters on the trees to conserve heat. However, it was not uncommon to see stray butterflies fluttering about.
